Low Round Table

Circa:  Late-Qing (19th Century)
Wood:  Elm
Region:  Shanxi
Dimensions:   34.5w x 11.5h
Condition:  Very good, original lacquer missing

This low table is a reminder of China’s ancient ‘mat-level’ culture. The table top’s height appropriately served people conducting their lives from the floor. Its original design so satisfies the needs which brought it into being, no modification is required even today.

The legs gently curve down to the horsehoof feet. The circular apron curves out from the waisted top. The open platform top is orbed by a six-sectioned frame. The tenon and mortise joinery pleasingly displays the completeness of its design.

Virtue: Wholeness
